Municipal elections

Municipal elections are held every six years in Luxembourg. With over 17,000 residents, Hesperange is one of the biggest municipalities in the country. In municipal elections, Hesperange residents elect 17 representatives who are in charge of the municipality’s tasks for six years.

Residents of the municipality who have the right to vote elect the municipal council.
Residents with Luxembourg nationality are automatically registered on the electoral roll and must vote once they turn 18. 
Non-Luxembourg nationals can also take part in municipal elections if registeron the local electoral roll.

The tasks are varied. A municipality is responsible for things like water supply and garbage collection. Each municipality can also draft its own projects, such as renovating school buildings or building sports halls and music schools.
It also carries out some services on behalf of the state, like issuing new ID cards.
