Our municipality of Hesperange
Luxembourg is divided into many different municipalities.
In the past, there were more municipalities than today. Why? Because sometimes two or even more municipalities combine. This is called a merger.
When municipalities merge, they form a new, larger one. So the number of municipalities has changed over time and could change again in the future.
The neighbouring municipalities of Hesperange are: Luxembourg City, Contern, Roeser, Weiler-la-Tour and Sandweiler.

The municipality of Hesperange
A municipality can consist of one or several localities. Since 1823, five localities have belonged to the municipality of Hesperange: Alzingen – Fentange – Hesperange – Howald – Itzig.
Each municipality has a mayor. Together with the aldermen and the municipal council, decisions are made for the municipality: for example, the construction of new playgrounds, new roads or new schools.
The river that flows through Hesperange is called the Alzette. It is also mentioned in the first verse of the Luxembourg national anthem “Ons Heemecht”, which is sung, for example, on National Day.
The municipality of Hesperange coat of arms
Every municipality in Luxembourg has its own coat of arms. It often features symbols that are typical of the municipality, such as castles, animals or rivers.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Hesperange is recognised by its red, gold and blue colours, and especially by the tower at the top right, which recalls the Hesperange castle.
The municipality of Hesperange logo
Since 2002, the municipality of Hesperange has had its own logo with typical symbols of Hesperange. In red, two elements can be identified: the Hesperange castle, also seen on the coat of arms, and the town hall.
The blue and black colours represent both the Alzette river and the motorway bridge. The five black lines connecting everything stand for the five localities of the municipality of Hesperange.
