The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg

The Grand Duke

Luxembourg is a monarchy, which means that one single person is at the top of the country.

In Luxembourg, this person is the Grand Duke. In other words, he is the head of state.

But a monarchy also means that the throne is inherited. When the Grand Duke “retires” or dies, he is replaced by his eldest son or daughter.

The Head of State of Luxembourg

The Grand Duke represents Luxembourg abroad. He also regularly invites heads of state.
When the Grand Duke or another member of the Grand Ducal Family visits, “De Wilhelmus” is played.

The Chamber of Deputies

Every five years, a new Parliament is elected in Luxembourg. The Chamber of Deputies consists of 60 men and women. These 60 people are called “deputies” and meet regularly in the Chamber of Deputies at the Krautmaart.

They can change existing laws or create new ones. The deputies must vote together to decide whether they support or oppose a new law.

The government

The government is made up of several ministers. Each minister is responsible for a specific area: education, transport, health, family, etc.

Laws

Although the Grand Duke is the head of state of Luxembourg, he is not allowed to make decisions without the government's approval. In other words, he cannot simply introduce new laws. That is the job of the Parliament.

For the new laws passed by the Chamber of Deputies to take effect, the Grand Duke must officially promulgate them.

Only from that moment are the laws official and can be applied.

Remembrance

Since 1946, the National Day of Remembrance has been held every year in October. On this important day, we remember those who died during World War II or who fought for freedom.
That’s why flower wreaths are laid at symbolic monuments throughout Luxembourg and its municipalities.
